Sacred Texts
There are four sacred text collections in Hinduism and they are the rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and the Artharva Veda.
- The Rig Veda which means “hymn knowledge” is a collection that contains more than a thousand chants to the Aryan gods. It is the most important of the Vedas because it has a relation to the origin of the universe.
- Yajur Veda which means “ceremonial knowledge” contains matter for recitation during sacrifices.
- Sama Veda which means “chant knowledge” is a handbook of musical elaborations of Vedic chants.
- Atharva Veda which means “knowledge from [the teacher] Atharva” consists of prayers and charms, an example of it would be a prayer to protect against snakes and sickness.
