Sacred texts and scripture
The first Mayan people wrote in hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are the symbols carved into stone or images painted on pottery. Hieroglyphics is commonly known because they appear in movies or books and it is believed to be one of the original forms of language written. Later, Indians summarized Mayan hieroglyphics and recorded them to Latin script. There are 3 books: Books of Chilam Balam, The Ritual of the Bacabs and most famous, Popol Vuh. Each book focuses on different aspects of Mayan life that were recorded from the original hieroglyphics. Mayan texts describe religious rituals, astronomy and are the most valuable source of information on the early civilization. These Mayan texts were not regarded as sacred, but instead they are important records of religious rituals and knowledge. |
