The Bhagavad Gita (Classics of Indian Spirituality)
The Bhagavada Gita is a part of a very long epic poem called the Mahabharta. The Mahabharta was written somewhere between 400 BCE and 400 CE and tells the story of how the sons of Pandu conquered their cousins, the Kauravas with the help of the God Krishana. It is written in dialogue form. It occurs mostly entirely between two figures, a prince, Ajuna, and his charioteer and advisor, Krishna.
The royal power of Arujuna is being threatened by his hundred cousins. He has to see if he wants to fight against their rule or let them lead. On one hand he knows his rule is correct but on the other hand he does not want to use violence. That is family are the enemy it makes the decision even harder. Arujuna is depressed and throws his arrows and bow in the middle of the battlefield and sits in his chariot with sorrow. The God Krishna appears, she is a form of Vishnu, and tells him that type of action was needed. She tells that a man that does his work naturally and perfectly is doing an act to of worship to the Gods. This means that Arujuna must not to what he wants but what is right or wrong. During this time in India, being peaceful and nonviolent was the predominant teaching. But, the God Krishna, advises him to fight. The God Krishna shows Arujuna that divine reality is a work within everything in the universe-in living and also in dying. Krishna even says that for the warrior "there is nothing nobler than a righteous war. This recommendation of Arujuna implies a moral problem for some followers of Hinduism.
