Historical background on the ANCIENT aztec civilization
The Aztecs began as a tribe in Northern Mexico and became a predominant force in Mesoamerica. They were believed to be a nomadic tribe and they are also known as the Tenochca because they were from the city of Tenochtitlan. The saw an owl on a cactus and believed that was a sign so they decided to build their city there near Lake Texcoco. They cleaned up the swaps and created artificial lands in which they could grow groups. They also developed a strong military that enabled them to build an empire. They were able to build an empire and controlled more than five to six million people.
They had several people visit their city. They had a Caste System that was very strict. The nobles were on the top and everyone else was in the bottom. In November 1510, Hernan Cortes arrived in Tenochtitlan founded Veracruz. The military of the Aztecs was not strong enough to defeat the army of the Spaniards. After, this war, Cortes created Mexico City and it became the European center in the New World. |
